The Developing Teacher Course with Spanish (DTCS)

Aim of the Course

This course is carefully designed to help you to develop as a teacher by reflecting on your experience as a language learner and a teacher. You will observe fellow teachers in action and complete a range of reflection and observation tasks each month. Your monthly practical assignment will be supervised by a tutor with the aim of helping you absorb what you are learning. Our Spanish classes are accredited by the Instituto Cervantes which is the sole accreditation for institutions teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

The Developing Teacher Course with Spanish

The Developing Teacher Course with Spanish is for those who would like to fine-tune their skills as a language trainer while learning Spanish along the way. It is aimed at TEFL teachers with an initial qualification (such as the CELTA or CertTESOL) and 0-3 years experience. We are able to offer Spanish classes from A1 (beginner) up to B2 (upper-intermediate). For this reason, we can only accept candidates who have a maximum B1.2 level of Spanish when they join the course.

The timetabled sessions are held from 11:30–13:30 Monday to Friday. The remaining hours are flexible and can be arranged around your work schedule.

You can sign up for a minimum of 1 month and up to a maximum of 12 months and it can be extended at any time during the course.

Each month will consist of the following:

English Teacher Development (40 hours)
  • 4 hours of face-to-face group workshops
  • 4 hours of online teacher training webinars
  • 6 hours of observation of experienced teachers
  • 8 hours of reflective tasks
  • 18 hours of independent work

Spanish (40 hours)

Total:
80 hours per month (20 hours per week)

Course fee: €300 per month

To live and work in Barcelona, many non-EU citizens sign up for our 4-week CELTA course followed by at least 6 months of our Developing Teacher Course with Spanish (7 months in total).

This combination will allow you to apply for a long-term student visa, and after arriving in Spain, apply for student work authorisation. (If you already have the CELTA or a similar qualification, you can meet the requirements by enrolling in at least 7 months of DTCS instead of 6.)

Once you have applied for student work authorisation, you can legally work up to 20 hours per week, which is considered full-time for a newly qualified teacher.

To pass the course and receive the certificate you will have to:

  • Attend at least 85% of the timetabled course.
  • Complete the development tasks to a satisfactory standard.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with tutors and fellow trainees.

The Developing Teacher with Spanish certificate will:

  • State the length of the course.
  • Outline the components of the course in detail.
  • Confirm that you have passed the course.
