Who is this course for?

This course will be of particular interest to teachers who need to prepare students for IELTS. It is suitable for recently qualified TEFL/TESOL teachers with an interest in improving in this area quickly and for more experienced teachers who find themselves teaching Cambridge and other exam classes for the first time. It is also designed to meet the needs of teachers with some experience who would like to develop specific teaching skills or techniques. Each module offers a range of input, discussion topics and assignments to suit your context and experience.

What will I do on the course?

The course is designed to take about 30 hours and you can do it over three or six weeks. You will complete three modules covering a range of topics. You will read articles, blogs and watch videos and then discuss the content with your tutor via forum discussions and live tutorials. For each module you have to complete an assignment. You can choose from a range of activities to suit your situation and experience.

The Trainer:

Tim is based in Bangkok, where he works as a CELTA trainer and prepares students for the IELTS exam. He has taught EAP at Chulalongkorn Univerisity (Thailand) and also Leicester University (UK). He spent 10 years teaching English in Russia and has also worked in Japan.

How will this course help me develop?

IELTS is an increasingly popular exam for young adults around the world. It is often used as a marker for entry to English speaking universities. By the end of this course you will have a greater understanding of how to approach teaching IELTS exam courses. You will have looked at a range of teaching materials and activities which can be used in classes. You will have a better understanding of how to train learners in key strategies for these exams. Even teachers with experience can find IELTS exam classes challenging to teach. Firstly, the stakes are often higher. There is a clear result for the students at the end and failure in the exam can be costly.

As a teacher you want to give your students the best chance of passing and your impact in terms of motivation, organisation and feedback on their performance can be decisive. Secondly, you may find that the most effective approach to take and the type of activities you use is somewhat different to general English classes you teach. Thirdly, you may find that you need more specific and detailed knowledge of the exams themselves and tips and ideas for preparing students for success.
