Course Overview

Teaching English to company employees can require different approaches and skills to teaching "general English". Groups are often much smaller and usually have specific requirements relating to the contexts they will need to use English in.

The course helps to prepare you for this with practical workshops introducing the world of Business itself as well as teaching in Businesses. We use case studies and practical examples.

Feedback on the course

I was hired and assigned in-company classes starting immediately, so it was somewhat of a sink or swim situation! Having never taught Business English before (and with only the TEFL course as teaching experience) I felt much more prepared and confident knowing I had at least some Business English experience and resources I could utilize. I am also much younger than the majority of my students, and I now teach every level from elementary to advanced. Things I learned in the course I use everyday. For example, we learned about needs analysis on Monday, and I used it in each of my classes that same week!

Why a TBE extension course?

A Teaching Business English extension course can widen your job prospects and, equally importantly, give you extra confidence in dealing with specific challenges of teaching Business English.
English Language Teaching is very diverse. There are opportunities to teach anything from a class of four year old children to a one to one with a business executive who needs coaching to improve his or her presentation skills. Some teachers, particularly in the early stages of their career find themselves doing both! Opportunities will vary according to where you work and your own preferences.
Employers are naturally impressed if you have some specialised training in key aspects of teaching Business English.

The course includes

1. Workshops with specialist trainers covering skills and materials for teaching Business English. 2. Observations of experienced teachers

3. Project work and case studies to give you hands on experience of planning classes

4. On-line support from your course tutors

5. The opportunity to shadow a teacher at OxfordTEFL for half a day, observing and assisting classes and discussing them with the teacher

These courses are suitable for English teachers with at least one year of experience post certificate or 2 years if they haven't completed a Trinity Certificate in TESOL or equivalent.

Course timetable

Face to face

The course is 20 hours, over three days, Monday-Wednesday inclusive. Timetable from 9.30am-5pm. The on line work will be in the following 3 weeks using our VLE*

On-line

The course is three weeks. You will use our VLE.* You will complete one module each week. You can choose when to work during the week, but expect to dedicate around 8 hours.

What is an on line course like?

On line and face to face courses are very similar. You will be with a fixed group of course partcipants, a team of tutors will lead and support you in tasks and you will work both individually and in teams. The VLE includes forums, links, tasks and opportunities to communicate with tutors and other course partcipants.

The timeframe for working is the main difference. Face to face learning happens in "sessions" or workshops which last one to two hours. On line we use modules which run for a week. Face to face training is synchronised , everyone participates at the same time. On-line learning is "asynchronist" , people participate at different times.
