English for Academic Purposes

Who is the course for?

Teachers with limited previous knowledge and teaching experience in EAP will benefit greatly from taking this course but the course also seeks to inspire more experienced EAP teachers with new and creative ideas for this context. However, if you already have extensive experience and knowledge in EAP this course may not be suitable for you.

What will I do on the course?

The course is designed to take about 30 hours and you can do it over three or six weeks. You will complete three modules covering a range of topics. You will read articles, blogs and watch videos and then discuss the content with your tutor via forum discussions and live tutorials. For each module you have to complete an assignment. You can choose from a range of activities to suit your situation and experience.

Kat has been teaching EAP for over 5 years, and returns annually to The University of Manchester as a tutor on the summer pre-sessional programme. She holds an MA in Educational Technology & TESOL and the Trintiy DipTESOL. She also has her own blog, English and Tech

How will this course help me develop?

This course will help you make the most of previously acquired teacher skills and resources, as a means of ensuring that the EAP learner needs are met. Many ELT professionals think that teaching EAP requires specialist knowledge, but quite like teaching Business English, while this is a great advantage, it is by no means essential. The content is both theoretical and practical, as a means of giving teachers both an understanding of this branch of ELT, as well as ideas and tasks to explore and reflect on in the EAP classroom. Teaching EAP is an ever-expanding industry. The demand for specialising as an ELT professional is higher than ever, and EAP teaching is now offering diverse work opportunities. This course will help you improve your knowledge of academic study skills, critical thinking, independent learning, and research skills.

Apply for a Teacher Development Course

I would definitely recommend the course to any teachers who are embarking on teaching EAP, as it really crystalises the key concepts, gives you a lot of information and material that you could use, and has very good feedback. AND it’s a quick course, too! Continue reading
