The training was fantastic. The teachers all really enjoyed Claire’s input and the session was very productive. I think it is something we will definitely re-visit when the opportunity arises.

Course Overview

If you have a group of teachers who would like to take one of our courses or you would like a tailor made course for them, you should consider our in house courses. These are closed courses for schools and institutions offered on our premises in Barcelona, London, Prague and Cadiz or on your premises-we send our trainer or trainers to you.

Course content

Courses are tailor made for your school. They may include a combination of face to face and online elements. Our listed open courses can also be run for a school in house.

Why an In-house course?

There are several practical reasons why an in house course may be the best option for your school.

  • It can be tailored to suit the needs of your staff
  • It costs less than sponsoring staff individually to do external courses. You will also find funding is probably available*
  • It can be more convenient to do the course on your own premises and on dates which suit you.
Above all, investing in your staff will improve their teaching and improve your business. *in Spain for example, European and regional government funding is available. Please contact us tesol@oxfordtefl.com for further details.

How to apply

Contact us directly by phone, skype or e mail to discuss your training needs.

Assessment and certification

This will depend on the type of course and training you require

The trainers

Our Team of trainersare all Trinity Diploma or DELTA qulaified as a minimum and have a wealth of experience in training teachers in a wide range of contexts. They include established writers and conference speakers, capable of providing inspiration as well as practical ideas and support. Our approach is to work closely with the sponsor school to ensure that what we offer is appropriate and practical for your context.

Course Timetable

We will negotiate this with you. Courses can be online, face to face, or a combination of the two. Face to face courses will normally be intensive unless your school is located close to one of our centres. On line course can be intensive or extensive.

About on-line learning with OxfordTEFL

We believe that distance learning works best when it captures, as far as possible, the dynamics of face to face learning, even when that means less flexibility (see below). A sense of isolation can cause people to drop out of distance learning courses. Our Distance/On-line In-house courses have the following key features, which ensure motivation remains high:

Variety of ways of learning
Through our virtual learning environment you will use the internet to communicate with tutors and fellow course members, access materials and complete learning tasks.

Interaction
Our virtual learning environment (VLE) allows you to communicate individually and collectively with tutors and other course members, both for social and study purposes. You will be assigned individual, group and pair tasks, as in a "real" classroom with the difference that, instead of all working at the same time (synchronised) you can log on and off and contribute at times which are convenient to you. You may, on a few occasions, be required to log on at the same time as other course members for "lessons", "conferences" or "chats" in the virtual classroom.

A real class of fellow students
In many distance courses, learners start and finish courses at any time of the year and join an infinite number of other distance learners at various stages of their course. Our courses have start and finish dates and a defined group of participants, just like our face-to-face courses. You will have tasks and deadlines to keep and be expected to maintain an appropriate rhythm (see above). In other words, flexibility is limited in order to maintain motivation.

Learning how to learn on-line
As well as learning about teaching and language you will have the opportunity to experience and reflect on the nature of on-line learning itself.

Ease of use
You will find it easy to use the virtual learning environment, even if you are relatively unfamiliar with this kind of learning and there will be plenty of support and guidance from tutors to deal with any queries and make sure you are on track.

We use “Moodle”, a “virtual learning environment” (VLE), which allows you to:

  • upload and download course information and material
  • access materials on and off-line
  • participate in live and non-synchronised discussions
  • send work to tutors and receive feedback
  • communicate with tutors and other members of the class individually and as a group.
  • interact in ways similar to a real classroom with the advantage of being able to access it at times convenient to you.
We use skype/messenger or telephone for personal tutorials.

You will need to have regular access to a computer with internet connection, but won’t need to spend huge amounts of time actually on line.

We recommend you install skype if you don't have it already to take advantage of cost free calls to tutors. www.skype.com

"Working with Primary and Secondary school English Teachers in Shenzhen, China"

In-house courses Where: Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China

How long: 2 weeks

Why: 10 schools were selected by the Chinese government from all over China to take part in the training course. Teachers won scholarships to attend the course.

Who: 100 Primary and Secondary school teachers used to teaching classes of 50-80 students.

What: The timetable consisted of lesson planning, learning styles, motivation, ELT methodology, using role-play, creating speaking activities, project work, content based learning, using the Internet in the classroom, testing and assessing, presenting new language through listening skills, large classes, classroom management and peer teaching.

Before the course: The teachers were used to working straight from a very dry coursebook. The students worked individually on tasks and hardly ever work on pairs or groups. The teachers we worried about the students working together due to logistics and discipline problems. The only time students were called upon to speak was to drill long texts they had to memorise.

During the course: We taught the teachers how to adapt and supplement coursebooks so their students could identify with the subject matter more easily. We introduced motivating speaking activities to encourage the students to communicate with each other in a meaningful way. We showed them fun vocabulary games that didn't just rely on learning from rote. We also addressed the most pressing aspects of Classroom management to help them control such large classes.

Testimonial: 'We started schooling in the beginning of september, here, i have to say "thanks" to you for your great help during the training, so many methods we learned work well in my daily teaching. the group work, debate, puzzle words, small games, i adopt them on purpose in my class and i have gained much praise from my students for their great progress.'
