Finding a job
Job Opportunities: Barcelona / Spain / London / Prague / The World Job opportunities Barcelona * Currently there is a shortage of teachers. * The demand for teachers of Business English is growing rapidly, providing many opportunities for in-company work and 1:1 classes. * Many parents are keen for their children to improve their English and private lessons are becoming increasingly popular. * There are a growing number of language schools in the city and in satellite towns too. Spain * Economic expansion and increased prosperity in the country in general make it an excellent place to teach English. * There are opportunities throughout Spain, in the north, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, the South, The Balearics and The Canary Islands. * Language schools vary in size and form, from small private Academias to large institutions like International House and The British Council. * Many employers do most of their recruitment locally and at the last minute! Prague * Prague is booming; it is at the forefront of the emerging markets that make up the former Eastern Bloc states, now members of the European Union. * This has had a direct impact on English Language Teaching (ELT) opportunities in the city as most teaching work comprises in-company lessons, English being so essential in the business world. * The term "Business English" is often loosely applied, e.g. a larger business may want to offer its lower-ranking workers English lessons, in which case their linguistic needs will in fact remain fairly general, due to their limited ability with the language. London * There are literally hundreds of language schools in London. * Opportunities range from Business English in small groups to General English for large groups of multi-national students. * ESL (English as a Second Language) is a booming sector due to the large numbers of immigrants settling in Britain now. Most universities and colleges have an ESL department. * Enrolment on courses is often ongoing throughout the year. However, July and August are the busiest months by far, as intensive summer courses for teenagers and adults are incredibly popular. The World * The scope of opportunities is huge and the sheer number of locations is mind-blowing! * Central and Eastern Europe are rapidly expanding markets, and students are usually very keen to learn. * China is an increasingly popular destination. A large proportion of teachers are employed in Beijing and Shanghai, although there are many opportunities now in the provinces. * Japan is still a very popular destination with new teachers. Shane and English First are large recruitment organizations that offer packages for teachers. * The JET programme has been employing native speakers of English in private and state schools since 1987. * Other large schools are GEOS Corporation. Nova Group (which had more than 850 schools in Japan) went bust recently. * In Latin America, there is a great demand for English teaching; the most popular countries being Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. * It is a good idea to find a job with an International Organization, especially if you are off to a far-flung corner of the globe. * International House, The British Council, Shane Global Language Centres, Berlitz are large language schools chains. * Recruitment Organizations such as EF, Saxoncourt, and Language Link all have offices in the UK. What do we do in the Careers Department?
Remember, the best guarantee of finding work abroad teaching English, is holding a British Council recognised certificate, in other words Trinity (Cert TESOL) or Cambridge (CELTA). The service is open to all for a fee of 50€ per year. TEFL Lifestyles I took the Trinity Cert. TESOL Course at OxfordTEFL in November 2007. After passing the course, Kate sent my CV out to over 100 schools. The next day I was inundated with job offers. I thought I would struggle to find work, but there are alwasy hours going if you are prepared to look. I am still in Barcelona, now teaching at Oxford House and can see myself staying here for a while". Darren Campbell Thanks for getting back to me so fast. Yes, please send my CV off, I would really appreciate it. As far as China it has been a great time. I just did a three week summer camp, but I had a great time. It was difficult but very rewarding. I taught very young kids, 6-7 years old, and they knew almost no English, but they are great. I love them, and I had a wonderful experience. Chinese bureaucracy can be a little much, but you just have to realize that's how things are done here. Feel free to give my email to anyone who's interested in coming to China, I can give them info, and my good friend worked here for over a year. I also just finished a year in Kiev, Ukraine, and I can give anybody who's interested information or advice about that as well. Thanks for you time, and let me know if you need anything else from me. Thanks, Regards Shanti Marthaller This is Steffi. Thanks for your update mails re jobs! I have settled in Valencia, and I love it here. I work in a small, friendly language school (I think their HQs are in Barcelona), I have small classes with 3 students max. and a very nice director of studies, who is helping me a lot settling into my new job. It is part-time, which is what I wanted, so there is space for being a musician. On Wednesday I performed in the Palau de la Musica accompanying a children´s choir... I live in a cool flat, a bit crazy and bohemian , and they don´t mind me practising- important! Anyway, hope you are well! Do give my kind regards to Anna and Jane and Violeta and Luke and Mark and everybody. Stefanie Waegner TESOL Course in Barcelona, July 2007 Hi Oxford, My name is Nicole Hooks and I completed the Oxford Barcelona course in July of 2006. I am still living in Barcelona and I am still teaching English. I have been teaching since I left the course and have really been enjoying it. As stressfuly as it can be at times I really do love teaching English. The training and education that I received from Trinity has gone a long way and I really do value the course. I am constantly recommending the program to anyone who even mentions that they are thinking about teaching. I definitely think that I got my money's worth and more. Cheers, Nicole Hooks I was concerned after completing the course that, as an American, I might be unable to find a job here in Barcelona. However, with the help of the careers service here at Oxford Tefl, I have secured some excellent teaching positions with good pay here in Barcelona. With their help, I am confident that I can remain in Barcelona for as long as I want. And, if I ever need help finding more work, I know that they will be here to guide me in my job search. Spain has always been one of the most popular destinations for TEFL teachers. Most teachers head to the main cities of Madrid and Barcelona, but you will tend to find language schools in many towns all over the country. Most recruitment is done locally, and most institutions require teachers to have either a Trinity Cert. TESOL or CELTA as a minimum qualification. The main opportunities lie in teaching General English, Business English and Kids. The Cambridge exams are very popular too, especially PET, FCE and CAE. Many classes run from Monday to Thursday with some work available on Friday. Also, as a first year teacher you may well end up teaching on Saturday mornings. You could have a split shift timetable meaning that you work from approximately 8.30-10am, a lunchtime shift of 2-4pm and an evening shift of 7-9.30pm. This can take some getting used to as your days are long and the travelling between classes can be tiring. However, once you have decided how to plan your free time between classes, you will have the benefit of being able to do that extra bit of preparation on the bus and get to the swimming pool when it´s less busy! Expect to do around 20 to 25 hours teaching a week and earn around 1200 euros a month on average when you start out. The cost of living in Spain is still relatively low compared to other EU countries. Expect to pay around 350 - 450 Euros a month for accommodation in major cities. Spanish lifestyle and opportunities for winter sports, travel, historic culture and the beach need no introduction. As an EFL teacher you will not be wealthy, but should find you have enough to enjoy what Spain has to offer. FAQs about finding a jobWhen is the best time for me to look for work? Back to top of page Our graduates talk about their jobs: I thought it might be interesting to share what I have done since I completed the Trinity TESL certificate course in October 2003. I went on from Barcelona to teach English to Central American immigrants in Washington DC, and then spent the next two years in Belgrade, Serbia teaching English and doing any and all work that came my way. I returned from Serbia to the US in the summer of 2006 and started an MA TESL at the School for International Training in Vermont. I am now finishing my portfolio and hope to return to Europe soon, doing teacher training or curriculum development. That's the most succinct version of the past four years that I can manage! I can say with complete confidence that the Certificate program led me down the path I am on now, I have encouraged countless others to enroll at the school and even my professors at graduate school were very curious to find out where I'd done my initial training! I loved the program while I was there and remain a major cheerleader for it today, I am sure this is the same endorsement you get from all who have done the program though! Thanks for your time and consideration...and training! Cheers, Anna Carroll I think that the Career Services Department at Oxford TEFL does an incredible job. They have helped me several times to understand the job
market and to help me find the opportunities that are available in the Barcelona area. I just landed my first job and I owe it all to the help I
received from the career services department Being a non-EU citizen made the job-hunt more complicated, but it was by no means impossible. I spent more time on the phone than some of my friends, personally dropped off more resumes, and definitely had some doors shut, but I also worked on my ingenuity, interviewing skills, etc. After putting up flyers, emailing resumes, visiting schools, making calls, and ensuring that I got face-time with employers, I now have a full schedule that I´m really happy with. Ultimately, employers are looking for someone with a lot of energy, a great personality, and someone who they know they can trust- all qualities that have nothing to do with nationality. Hey Anna, so cool to hear from you--I'm still at that job in Thailand, in a town called Sriracha about 2 hours south of Bangkok. Anneli just took a job out here at the same school, but at different branch (she's in Thonburi, just outside Bangkok). I've got 50 kids in each class!!! it's completely insane. so if you've got any advice on activities to do with an unmanagably large class, send 'em along! Jocelyn Herzog Cert. TESOL Course in Prague. The course fits a lot into its four weeks, including a lot of actual teaching practice which helps more than anything to prepare you for the classroom. The theory sections can be fascinating and the tutors are all very capable and positive. Since graduating I've been working with adults in the south of France with the British Council's assistantship programme, and this course gave me the skills and confidence to start teaching immediately. Siofra McSherry, 22, Prague August 2004, UK/France Siofra McSherry Cert. TESOL Course in Prague. Hi I'm Robert and I did my Tefl course during October 2004. The course served as an excellent introduction to teaching, and gave us the opportunity to teach a wide variety of abilities. We received very detailed feedback on our teaching which enabled us to develop successfully. It's an intensive month but great fun too. I went on to teach in Poland for six months and then at a summer school in England, where I am returning this summer. Doing a Tefl certificate provides you with many opportunities. I am currently undertaking a PGCE to teach History at secondary schools in England, and have found my experiences gained while teaching English to have been very valuable. Robert Evans Cert. TESOL Course in Prague. After completing the TESOL Cert. in Prague, I quickly found an exciting job in Riga, Latvia. In addition to being a great experience, it really prepared me to succeed in my career as an educator. I'm back in the US now, teaching ESL in the public school system during the day and tutoring adults privately at night. By June, I'll have opened up my own office and be serving about 30 students. It's going pretty well. I'm also working towards my MA TESOL through a local university... at the rate I'm going I'll be finished in 2008. Looking back, the summer in Prague was one of the best experiences in my life." Eric Gulley Cert. TESOL Course in Prague. This is Ryan (Zach) Smith from the class of June 2004. I'm doing very well right now and am back in the States. My friend Nick Siegel and I didn't seek work right after the course and I just now got a job in the States and he went back to Vienna to look for work. I'm working in a high school in St. Louis Missouri as an ESL teacher, working with 9th-12th graders from over 20 different countries. It is awesome. On the other hand, I will be keeping this job for just one year and then will be off again looking for ESL work in either Japan or Germany. So for now I'm doing well and I will be looking at possibilities for work in those 2 countries during the course of this year. Please tell Iona my story, as I'm sure that it would please her to know. Let all know I'm doing well and truly miss Barcelona! Cheers, The Career Services Department at Oxford TEFL was instrumental in assisting me to find appropriate work for my skills. My preference was to stay in Barcelona but being an American national, the options seemed limiting. Anna was extremely honest with the options I had if I decided to stay and the necessary steps I would need to make including the look of my resume, building contacts and contacting schools. I was lucky enough to find some part-time employment through Anna herself. Many employers will contact her looking for people with particular skills related to knowledge of students mother tongue, child-development, business education, etc. I assume I fit the bill as result of my experience, which Anna so gratefully considered. All in all, the Careers Services Department is meant to help and does. Certainly it is not entirely up to them. The more the individual student makes clear what their significant skills are and what they want, the easier it is for Anna and other teachers to connect one with potential employers. Many thanks again! I have almost come to the end of my one year contract here at English First. I just have until November and then its back to England. The school is in a small town called Jambi on the Indonesian island of Sumatera. I know so much more about English than I did and am slowly learning how to best get it acroos to the class. The language here, bahasa Indonesian, is an easy language to learn, whithout any 'to be' verb or any tenses and it's easy to pronounce. How nice to hear from you - 11 months is more than a few I think! How are you - having fun in Barcelona I hope. I have had a brilliant year (you might remember I was taking a one year career break). I have been back at work a month now. I'm at the same college but have a new job - Head of Development. I'm enjoying it so far! I spent 6 months in The Gambia and had a wonderful time. I lived in a really nice flat near where several of my friends live so it was lovely going to see them regularly - and the beach was just a 20 minute walk away. Take care, Anna - have a nice time with all your new students! Hey Barcelona. this is Jessica Springer, and i'm still in Cambodia. teaching at an excellent school with amazing resources, and opportunities, like next term i get to teach a diploma class, creative writing. however, growing tired of phnom penh, and will go home in December for a month. then, i'll come back and travel a bit, laos and northern thailand, then off to south korea to work in Busan. that's the plan anyway! i'd like to get back to europe soon, but need to save money and South Korea is supposed to be good for that. that's all. how many of my group are teaching english right now? hmm. send 'em to Asia. Please feel free to put any interested teachers in touch with me! Belgrade is a magnificent city with loads of job opportunities, pay isn't too bad, but the cost of living is super low, so it all works out. I know people at all of the international schools and loads of language schools, so I could help place people... I've been wanting to write you all for awhile now! Thanks for your continuing interest. One of the reasons for doing the course was to be qualified to work at Siemens Learning Campus which is quite near my home here in Germany. It's where they teach all those German engineers English! And I got the job!! I've started out with one group( I could have had two more but I'm completely booked up with other courses!) I'm so pleased to have the chance to work for Siemens because their headquarters is here so courses will keep on coming! Thanks again for your great course!! Tell Iona and Duncan hello, I just loved working with them!!! I am working in Tallinn, Estonia teaching teenagers in a private language school, pre-int to advanced. The Careers Service at OHC was well equiped to deal with people like me who planned to stay in Barcelona, as well as those who wished to work in another country. The School has a comprehensive list of the main hiring schools in the area, as well as various contact details for the people in the schools who do the actual hiring. The careers service are at hand to help at all stages of the application process, offering advice before and after the interview, and are keen to keep in touch with former students to enhance their links to schools. Thanks for all your help Anna, you´ve been really great trying to sort us all out and keep in touch with us even though we´ve left, it´s really appreciated! ..it seems like a really good school and the guaranteed hours is of course a bonus. They are actually going to let me have use of their car for at least 4 out the 8 journeys I ´m gonna make each week, which will help too. There´s a few from OHC here, who are also fans of the work you do! I´ll keep you posted. I am teaching in Chia-Yi, a beautiful city in the middle part of Taiwán. I am wnjoying my new surroundings and teaching children in a small city, it´s a quick scooter ride into Taiwan´s high mountains. Taiwan´s cost of living is low and teacher salaries are high, making it one of the most lucrative spots on the TEFL circuit. My school, New Garden Language School, is very modern. Teachers have their own desks and computers. The owners and staff are very supportive and pleasant to deal with. Good luck with everything, I hope everyone is enjoying Oxford Tefl as much as I did. After the course, I moved to Bratislava, as planned. I did some half-hearted looking for work. I know it's illogical since I chose ESL, but I found it hard to hustle for work that pays so much less than I used to get as a government lawyer. I answered an ad for a part-time position in a city of 27,000 a 45 min train ride away. They hired me. They are thrilled to have me, which is very nice. I realised that teaching was a career that I´ve been interested in from High School. I decided to do TESOL at Oxford Tefl which gave me the opportunity to qualify and teach at the same time. By doing this I was able to decide quite quickly that teaching was right for me. Working in Italy now is great. Teaching itself is very diverse (I teach children from 7 years old to adults). The Italians (like the Spanish) make brilliant students and I am learning new ways of teaching everyday.... I want to teach for another year or so and then open an English-speaking nursery school here in Jesi, Ancona. Doing TESOL is probably the best career move I´ve made. I completed the OHC course in August and got a job in International House Moscow, Russia. The visa process took weeks, that was the only tricky part. I would be happy to talk to anyone interested in working in Russia. I signed a two year contract in The Maldives! I will be teaching English at a five star resort. It promises to be the most challenging EFL assignment so far! I will create an english program for all of the employees of two slands from level zero to advanced. There are between 150 and 200 employees. I will not only create, but I will be the ONLY teacher. I will work 6-7 days a week, 9 hours a day including preparation time. I am more than a little sad to leave Barcelona again, but I can´t pass up this opportunity! Love and hugs! |
